The fifth grade students of Room 4 have been quite busy during the first weeks of school!
We have begun to establish ourselves as a classroom "team" by getting to know one another, understanding the routines of our room and school, and developing shared expectations of what our classroom should look and sound like during work times.
As a class, we are beginning to build a community of readers who can recognize a "Just Right Book," share recommendations, and offer thoughtful conversation about literature. Students have begun using strategies for generating personal narrative stories and writing entries daily during Writer's Workshop. In Math, we have started to review concepts learned in fourth grade such as arrays, factors, and the use of rules to relate multiplication and division. Students seem to be responding very well to the workshop models we are using in fifth grade reading, writing, and math as well as the switching of classrooms for Science with Mr. Garland.
Throughout the start of our school year, we have returned to the topic of goal-setting. Students are asked to reflect on last year's achievements and struggles, and set goals for this year. We will continue to reflect upon ourselves as learners throughout the year, set individual and group goals, and decide upon the necessary steps that will need to be taken in order to reach those aspirations.
I look forward to meeting families on Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 18th. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via school email at [email protected]. You can expect bi-weekly updates through our classroom blog here on www.farleyfive.com, as well as the occasional reminder email from me of website updates, announcements, or upcoming events.
Sincerely,
