During the past 2 weeks, we have been diving into the world of division! Here is our display of students' most recent math work. The students were paired up and challenged to create a division word problem that used a 2-digit divisor and a 3-digit dividend, the quotient also needed to have a remainder. As you can see, the students did a fantastic job! You may be hearing the term “partial quotient method” from your student. This is the method we are using to solve division problems. This method allows students to break up a dividend into “friendly” numbers and have an easier time finding the quotient. See the below video for some examples of this process.

In Social Studies, students have learned about Christopher Columbus, his multiple trips to the "New World" from Spain, and the hardships that came with his voyages. Students are writing letters to Columbus and applying for various jobs that are needed to complete his voyage to the Far East. In this realistic fiction writing, the students are required to tell Columbus what job they would like, why they are qualified, and their reason for leaving the comfort of Spain for such a mysterious and dangerous journey. Next, students will be researching other European Explorers in teams and presenting their findings.
Our nonfiction reading has begun to take off. Students are reading nonfiction texts about various topics such as the history of the baseball glove, invertebrates and vertebrates, and extreme weather. We have been working on identifying a text’s main idea and supporting details using a boxes and bullets organizer.
Students are in the “generating ideas” stage of the informational writing process. We have been brainstorming topics that students are “experts” in and then pouring everything we know onto the pages of our notebooks. The end result of this writing unit will be an informational feature article on a topic chosen by each student.
Upcoming events include fall conferences and the fifth grade Spooky Science that will be held on Friday, October 31st during the school day. We are all looking forward to the spooky science experiments that will be demonstrated by our parent volunteers on the 31st. Thank you to all who have helped prepare for this event! Please remember that the next two Wednesdays (10/29 and 11/5) will be HALF DAYS for students due to conferences. If you have any questions, please email me.
Sincerely,
