Writing: We have launched into the Research-Based Argument Essay! During the unit, the class will begin writing about the same topic, collecting research to support students' opinions. Our topic is Chocolate Milk in Schools: Healthful or Harmful for Students? We are collecting evidence from articles, videos, interviews, and nutrition facts to support each side of the argument. Students will soon be writing a fresh research-based argument essay about a topic of their choice.
Science: We have begun our Electricity and Magnetism unit in science and the students are LOVING it! Students enjoyed some hands on "lab" work this week to complete a circuit using a small light bulb, a D battery, and one wire. This is a great inquiry unit. We will continue to learn about circuits, conductivity tests, and the relationship between electricity and magnetism as we continue the unit.
Reading: Students have been participating in historical fiction book clubs all centered around the American Revolution. As we wrap up our book clubs before the February vacation, students will create a "Movie Trailer" for their book with the use of the school ipads and help from Mrs. Tenhor.
Math: We are in the midst of our second context unit of the year. Among the unit's big ideas, students are learning about the relationship between multiplication and division of fractions, the importance of recognizing the "whole" in a word problem, and how the associative, commutative, and distributive properties apply. The context of these problems includes children training for and running marathons, and the building layout of parks and playgrounds.
