Our Book Clubs have come to an end and we have begun our test prep unit for the upcoming ELA MCAS. Session I will be next Friday, March 27 and Session II will be on Monday, March 30. As a class, students have been practicing test taking strategies such as:
- Read the italics and directions before reading a passage
- Read the questions before reading the passage
- Noticing if a question refers to a paragraph or line number, then going into the passage and highlighting those sections
- Covering multiple choice answers with a post-it, reading the question, and writing our own response on the post-it, then finally removing the post-it to compare answers with the given choices
- Making sure when answering an Open Response, we: "Steal & Slide", refer to paragraph or line numbers, use the author's name and the passage's title, providing quotes from the text as well as our own thoughts, and using interesting and challenging vocabulary
We are wrapping up our research-based argument essays and getting ready to publish them finally! Our goal is to have published pieces by next week! Students have been working hard to draft counterclaims and appeal to their readers in order to convince others of their opinion. The next unit should be fun and interesting, we will begin working on Fantasy Fiction writing after we have published our current work.
