Science: Today we spent some time discussing how to categorize living and non-living things. Students also were put into teams to begin building our ecocolumns! These ecocolumns will mimic a terrarium and an aquarium in one! Students built terrariums by placing gravel, soil, water, and mustard seeds in the top portion of our ecocolumn. The aquarium was started with gravel and de-chlorinated water. After we allow the seeds to begin growing for 1-2 days, we will add critters such as pill bugs, crickets, earthworms, snails, and guppies. Students will make observations of the ecocolumn based on a variety of variables decided upon by groups such as compost items in soil or pollution and ask questions about the opportunities this models presents and the limitations of this model.
Looking for some extra science resources as MCAS approaches? This website has some great review games and activities: http://eduplace.com/parents/hmsc/content/vocabgames/#g5
Math: Students have been looking at graphs and analyzing the data and patterns they represent such as rate. This week, we will continue to review this unit as well as practicing the skill of writing algebraic expressions to represent the data in graphs.
Writing: The research-based argument essay has opened students up into the world of opinion writing. We are currently drafting letters to Mrs. Colella and Mrs. Gray posing arguments with reasons and evidence on the topic of chocolate milk. Should it be served at Bridge? Is it healthy? Ask your student!
Reading: Students have begun an Argument and Advocacy unit which mirrors our writing unit nicely. Students have been placed in research teams based on interest. Reading about issues such as plastic bags and expeditions such as climbing Mount Everest, students are analyzing information, looking for claims, reasons, and evidence posed by authors, and forming arguments themselves.
