Despite being a "short week" our fifth grade schedule has been packed with all sorts of back-to-school procedures, routines, getting to know one another activities, and information about the curriculum we will learn this year! Our class, which I will often refer to as our "team", has enjoyed hearing about classroom procedures such as Morning Meeting with Rufus, jobs including Pencil Patrol, Techy, and Gardener, checking in and out books from our library and much much more. As you get acclimated to our classroom website, you will find a great deal of information about our current and future happenings in 5F. Under the Announcements tab you will see this blog which I update every other week, typically on Fridays or Thursday evenings as well as regular announcements for upcoming events/holidays/etc. The About Tab holds information about our daily schedule including specialist days/time, a little bit about your teacher, Ms. Farley, a classroom playlist, and more. The Assignments tab will inform you about our weekly and some long term assignments as well as some great educational links which we use in school and at home. I hope this brief summary helps you begin to navigate and use our site!
Next week, we will begin our first unit in math and do a bit of review on multiplication facts, learn more about divisibility rules, and prime/composite numbers. We will also launch our first Writer's Workshop on Wednesday during which we will begin to generate ideas for personal narratives stories in the students' newly decorated notebooks. Students will also learn about our Reader's Workshop, how to find a "Just Right" book, and how to accurately use reading logs. In terms of Science and Social Studies, our year will begin with a Social Studies unit which focuses on the questions "What is History?" and Rules, Laws, and Responsibilities (Constitution/US government). After this unit is complete, we will change gears and learn about Weather Investigations in Science.
We welcome you to Bridge's Curriculum Night (parents/guardians only) on Thursday, September 24th and again to visit school Friday, September 25th with your child so he or she can show you around our classroom. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected].
Sincerely,
