During the first two weeks of October, the fifth graders have wrapped up our second math unit on decimals, place value, and computation. We have reviewed place value, learned how to multiply decimals, convert units of measurement, and more within this unit. The students will begin Unit 3: Multiplication and Division next week.
Bridge School’s new Student Council program was kicked off today with our 5th grade Election Day. It was an exciting day for the candidates and voters alike! Students from the lower grades were also interested in the election and visited the gym to view the candidates and their campaign posters. The representatives were announced over the intercom by Mrs. Colella. Photos from the event can be seen on Bridge School’s twitter account, @BridgeSchoolMA.
In our Writing Workshop, we have been preparing our personal narrative stories for an Authors’ Share on Tuesday. Our class will meet with Mr. Pittman’s class and perform readings of their work with other students, giving and receiving feedback.
We’ve begun to think about nonfiction books in Reader’s Workshop, noticing text features, using prior knowledge, and thinking about what we may learn from a nonfiction text. As we continue to analyze and read nonfiction texts, students will learn more about text structures, and identifying main ideas and supporting details.
The students seem to be very interested in our new Social Studies unit on European Explorers. We began this unit by reading some background information on why Europeans wanted to explore, the trade routes that existed, and the navigational tools used during this time of exploration (lateen, compass, rudders, cross staff). This week, students learned about Leif Erikson. Some were surprised to learn Leif Erikson discovered the New World about 500 years before Christopher Columbus! We will continue this unit and students will research individual European Explorers (Henry Hudson, Jacques Cartier, Amerigo Vespucci, etc.).
This week, students began writing their Weekly Reflections. This assignment requires students to write down at least 4 sentences at the end of each day, reflecting on at least 2 things they learned and 1 feeling they had at the end of the day. By Friday, students turn their daily jottings into paragraphs (about 1 brief paragraph per day: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), have their reflection signed by a parent, and turn them in. This assignment allows students to reflect on their week and what they’ve learned. It also allows parents and teachers some insight into each students opinions about the week. Please remind your child, these Weekly Reflections need to be signed by YOU before I receive them on Fridays!
Upcoming Events:
Fall Conferences will be held between October 21-November 6. Sign up information has been emailed to all families, you will need an access code to sign up online. If you need further information on how to sign up for a meeting time, please email me.
Enjoy the long weekend!
Sincerely,
